September 9 marks International Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Day, an opportunity to recognize the strengths and needs of children, youth and families living with FASD and to continue building greater awareness and understanding.

At the Children’s Aid Society of Toronto (CAST), a FASD informed practice is an important part of how we strengthen our knowledge and approaches to supporting children, youth and families.

Supporting FASD Informed Practice at CAST

CAST’s FASD Coalition brings together employees with specialized FASD knowledge and experience, including certified FASD consultants and trainers and members of our Health Services Department.

The Coalition supports staff by providing FASD informed consultation, guidance and learning opportunities. This includes consultations related to children, youth and families, collaborative complex case reviews with Health Services and training for staff, Foster Caregivers, caregivers and community professionals.

Through this work, the Committee helps build practical knowledge and approaches that recognize the individual strengths and needs of children and youth living with FASD.

CAST also participates in the Toronto FASD Coalition, collaborating with child welfare, children’s mental health and community health organizations to strengthen FASD knowledge and capacity across Toronto.

Continuing the Work

International FASD Day is an opportunity to recognize the importance of continued learning, collaboration and FASD informed approaches.

Through the work of our FASD Coalition and collaboration with community partners, CAST continues to strengthen our capacity to support children, youth and families impacted by FASD.
