November marks Adoption and Permanency Education Month in Ontario and provides us with an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the Adoptive Parents we work with who provide children and youth with lifelong connection, stability and security.
At the Children’s Aid Society of Toronto (CAST), our goal is always to keep children and youth safely connected to their families and communities. We do this in a variety of ways. In most cases, this means remaining at home with their families or temporarily within their extended networks through Kin or Foster Caregivers. It may also be in the form of adoption to further support permanency and belonging for children and youth in our care
Strengthening Partnerships and Community Engagement
Our approach to adoption and permanency includes a focus on education, partnership, and community engagement. Over the past year, we have strengthened relationships with community organizations and prospective caregivers to expand understanding, increase support, and encourage consideration of adoption.
For example, our participation in events with The 519 provided opportunities to engage with members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community to explore pathways to adoption. We also continue to work closely with AdoptOntario to support our efforts to connect children and youth with families who share their intersecting identities. In addition, through the Wendy’s Wonderful Kids (WWK) program, our three dedicated recruiters continue to help children and youth find permanency within their own circles of support. Their work emphasizes connection by identifying trusted adults, mentors and extended family members who can offer the lifelong relationships every young person deserves.
Expanding Representation and Support
CAST is currently focused on supporting sibling groups who hope to stay together in one home, children with complex needs who benefit from caregivers with patience, flexibility and strong advocacy skills, and adolescents seeking long-term connections and a sense of belonging as they move toward adulthood. Engaging potential Adoption Parents who reflect diverse identities, including race, culture, religion, gender and sexual orientation, also remains a key priority.
Thank You
As we mark this month, we extend our thanks to Adoptive Parents who have partnered with our Agency, and to the staff who support these families and ensure that every child and youth can experience connection, stability and care.
