Strengthening Partnerships and Community Engagement

Building strong partnerships is essential to helping children and youth achieve permanency. Over the past year, CAST has continued to collaborate with community organizations and adoption partners to raise awareness, engage prospective caregivers and create opportunities for children and youth to find lasting connections.

This year, CAST adoption staff actively participated in a targeted recruitment event in partnership with the Adoption Council of Ontario (ACO). The event focused on engaging prospective caregivers who have the skills, experience and interest needed to provide permanency for children and youth with complex needs. By connecting with individuals who are prepared to meet these needs, we can help broaden the possibilities for children and youth to find safe, supportive and lasting family relationships.

CAST also strengthened this partnership by co-hosting a main ARE event with ACO at our agency. The event welcomed approximately 100 participants, with five Children’s Aid Societies from across Ontario taking part. This collaborative initiative provided an important opportunity to bring agencies and prospective caregivers together, share information, and strengthen collective efforts to find permanent families for children and youth.

Recognizing that every child and youth deserves the opportunity to explore permanency, the CAST adoption team also took a proactive approach throughout the past year by reaching out to colleagues across the agency. This collaborative effort helped promote awareness of adoption eligibility and support referrals for children and youth who may benefit from permanency planning, ensuring that opportunities to explore lasting family connections are not overlooked.

Through our ongoing work with the Wendy’s Wonderful Kids (WWK) program, our dedicated recruiters continue to help children and youth explore opportunities for permanency. This work goes beyond identifying potential families. Recruiters build trusting relationships with children and youth, listen to their concerns, and help them work through barriers that may make permanency feel difficult or uncertain. For young people whose past experiences of loss and disrupted relationships have made them hesitant to consider adoption, recruiters provide consistent, individualized support that allows them to explore the possibility of a permanent family at their own pace. By recognizing each young person’s experiences, wishes and concerns, they help create space for renewed trust, openness and hope for lasting connections.

Expanding Representation and Support

CAST continues to focus on finding permanent families for sibling groups who hope to remain together, children and youth with complex needs who benefit from caregivers with patience, flexibility and strong advocacy skills, and adolescents seeking lasting relationships and a sense of belonging as they transition toward adulthood.

We also recognize the importance of engaging prospective adoptive parents from diverse backgrounds and communities, including those who reflect children’s and youth’s racial, cultural, religious and 2SLGBTQ+ identities. These efforts help broaden the pool of prospective caregivers and support meaningful connections that respect each child’s identity and lived experience.

Thank you

This month, we extend our appreciation to the adoptive parents who partner with our Agency, and to the staff who support children, youth and families throughout the adoption and permanency journey. Thank you for helping children and youth build lasting relationships, experience stability and strengthen their sense of belonging.
