Today, on May 14, 2023, the Children’s Aid Society of Toronto (CAST) celebrates Children and Youth in Care Day alongside child welfare agencies across the province. Proclaimed into law with the Children and Youth in Care Day Act, 2014, this event commemorates the valuable contributions that current and former youth in care make to our communities. It also serves as a platform to reduce stigma about young people involved with child welfare and recognize their resilience that we witness every day.
Again, this year, we join the Ontario Association of Children’s Aid Societies’ #ForgetMeNot campaign that is focused on ensuring that individuals in and from care know that they are not forgotten or alone and have the support of their community. This year’s campaign highlights the significance of strong networks and meaningful relationships in the lives of children and youth in care and encourages Ontarians to find opportunities to support their safety, success, and well-being. We encourage our community members to review the volunteer opportunities at CAST here, including becoming a Volunteer Mentor or Volunteer Driver to have a direct and positive impact on young people in our care.
In the spirit of bringing together children and youth and their support networks, we hosted a Children and Youth in Care Day event with over 140 attendees. While everyday we recognize the strength of young people in our care, the event provided us with a special occasion to celebrate their achievements and successes.
