Today we are learning about another discovery of unmarked graves of Indigenous people linked to the Canadian residential school system, impacting members of the Ktunaxa First Nation in BC.
While some of us may be shocked, this comes as no surprise to Indigenous communities. For years Indigenous people have shared that their children were stolen from their homes and communities, many of them never returned with their whereabouts unknown.
In the coming days and months we anticipate that communities will continue to make these tragic discoveries across Canada. We continue to reflect on what this means for those impacted, including our staff members and the children, youth and families we serve.
We are committed to supporting our community. If you are a residential school survivor in distress, or have been affected by the residential school system and need help, you can contact the 24-hour Indian Residential Schools Crisis Line at 1-866-925-4419, or the Indian Residential School Survivors Society toll free line at 1-800-721-0066.
