Introducing the Child Welfare Institute

Posted by catherine on June 27th, 2008

Supporting the Society in Training Research, Program Evaluation and Consultation

For many years our Society has contemplated how we can work together with our community service partners and colleges and universities to share our knowledge and skills across the child welfare field. We are very pleased to announce that we now have a Child Welfare Institute which will offer training, research, program evaluation and consultation to our community partners and students in the child welfare discipline. For 23, 102 children and 10, 321 families, the Children’s Aid Society of Toronto is hope for a brighter future. We protect children from abuse including neglect, help parents build healthy families and provide a safe, nurturing place for children and young adults to grow up and realize their dreams.

OUR MANDATE

Posted by admin on February 11th, 2007

The Children’s Aid Society of Toronto is one of the largest child welfare organizations in Canada. It is an incorporated not-for-profit agency governed by a volunteer board of directors and funded by the Province of Ontario.

Our legal mandate is to protect children from harm. Because of our belief in the importance of early intervention, we also provide assessments, crisis intervention, counseling and services to prevent child abuse and neglect. In addition, we help vulnerable communities to protect and support their children. Many prevention programs are offered in partnership with other community agencies. (more…)

HISTORY

Posted by admin on February 11th, 2007

It has often been said that the work of child welfare is a calling.  It touches your heart, your spirit, and your thoughts like few other experiences in life.  During the past century the Children’s Aid Society of Toronto has grown from a single Infants’ Home to become one of the largest child welfare organizations in North America.  Throughout this time the Society has remained steadfast to its original vision of helping children.

Two key figures in our history were J.J. Kelso, a crusading journalist who eventually went on to be the first “Minister” of child protection,  and Vera Moberley, a nurse who pioneered the modern day system of foster care.

More about our history can be found in the book, A Legacy of Caring, A History of the Children’s Aid Society of Toronto, by John McCullagh.  This book is available at the library or can be purchased through inquiries@TorontoCAS.ca.
