Celebrating our Foster Parents ‘Oscar Style’

Posted by catherine on May 29th, 2007

The Stars were out during the day!  Foster parents and staff donned their finest attire at Seventh Annual Foster Parent Tea, on June 2nd, with a Day at the Oscars theme.

Over 185 people walked the red carpet and had their photos taken by our resident staff paparazzi Irma D’Alonzo, Mumtaz Waljee and Ferdinand Herrera.  Our own E-Hollywood commentators Katie Gibson and Luc Drouin conducted red carpet interviews which were captured on video by Susan Vasquez from Visual Creations Photography and Videography.

Hosting the event was Marc MacDonald, “Marilyn Monroe aka Wilma Cannon” and James Dean aka Luc Drouin.

The room at the Franciscan Church of St Bonaventure was transformed into a Hollywood venue thanks to linens by Chair Décor Etc, tableware from A&S Special Eventsand Balloon Decor Yorli.  (more…)

One Mother’s Strength

Posted by catherine on May 16th, 2007

While eight out of every ten children helped by the Children’s Aid Society of Toronto remain at home, there remains two children who come into our care.span>  It is always a difficult situation, a thankless part of the job, and a last resort that neither family nor child welfare workers look forward to.  So when a mother turns around to say ‘thank you’ as she hands over her child to the care of the CAS of Toronto , it’s not just unusual, it’s exceptional. What is the Out and Proud Program?

Posted by irma on May 2nd, 2007

The Out and Proud Program enables the Children’s Aid Society of Toronto (CAS of Toronto) to ensure that its services are open, inclusive, safe, affirming and positive for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, transgender, two-spirit, intersex, gender non-conforming, queer and questioning (LGBTQ) children and youth  served by CAS of Toronto, as well as LGBTQ families, employees, volunteers and care providers.

We celebrate diverse sexual orientations and gender identities/expressions.

We assist CAS of Toronto to provide an environment that is free from homophobia, heterosexism, rigid gender expectations and transphobia.

LGBTQ Policies and Practices at CAS of Toronto

Posted by irma on May 2nd, 2007

Since 1994, CAS of Toronto has worked hard to be a positive space for LGBTQ people and has been a leader in child welfare in developing related policies, practices, guidelines and training. In 1995, CAS of Toronto published a ground-breaking report, We Are Your Children Too:  Accessible Child Welfare Services for Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Youth.   In 1994, we adopted policies supporting same-sex fostering and adoption. Now that discrimination in adoption on the basis of sexual orientation is prohibited, we are delighted to match many children to LGBTQ families every year.

Later in 1995, CAS of Toronto adopted a policy on Accessible Services for Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Youth  to ensure that services for LGB youth are inclusive, safe and equitable.  In 2008, CAS of Toronto updated and included gender identity and expression in our policy renamed Equitable Child Welfare Services Relating to Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity/Expression. We have developed Practice Guidelines for Sexual Orientation Equity, , which are available for a nominal cost.  We are currently developing Practice Guidelines for Gender Inclusion.
