CAS Income Tax Clinic Helps Build Life Skills for Youth

Posted by irma on April 27th, 2007

While most of us are scrambling to finish our income taxes, 35 youth have already completed theirs - with a little professional help thanks to the Children’s Aid Society of Toronto. The youth who attended one of the two Income Tax Youth Clinics, held this past March at Central and the Pape Adolescent Resource Centre (PARC), were helped out by nine busy accountants who generously donated their time and expertise.  It was a great experience for the youth involved, with one saying that “if I’d known I was going to get money back, I would have done this last year.”  click here for the full article….

The majority of us have fond memories of our formal night, with the fashion disasters and the pictures to prove it. The final graduation dance of high school marks an important milestone in a student’s life, and an expensive one.  The outfit, the flowers, and even the ticket to the event can cost upwards of a few hundred dollars.  This is a considerable amount of money for anyone, but more so for those on a low income.   The Corsage Project helps…..

From a child’s point of view

Thank u so much for making my family and me into a better family and also juilie. Because first i was really scared and i was very sad, but i’m like, really happy, and u guys made me proud cause now i know that my sister won’t go through it like i did. So thank u for giving your time 4 me, thank u so much.”–A 10 year old client, thanking her case workerThere are many kinds of happy endings, and one of those is when a child is successfully reunited with their family. If a child is brought into our temporary care, it is because their safety is at risk, and a child’s safety is always our first priority. The majority of our work involves making families stronger - connecting them to community resources and giving them time to solve their problems with our support. Eight out of every ten children the CAS of Toronto are involved with are helped in their own home. This girl’s happy ending is just one kind of happy ending that we strive for everyday, for every one of the 30, 891 children we work with.

National Volunteer Week, April 15 to April 21, pays tribute to the millions of Canadian volunteers across the country, who give of themselves, to better their communities, and the organizations serving those communities. National Volunteer Week is a time for all of us to pause and celebrate the energy and commitment of volunteers. (more…)

CAS of Toronto Committed to Accountability

Posted by catherine on April 4th, 2007

Following the Auditor General’s report, we have submitted an update to the Ministry of Children and Youth Services detailing the actions taken by our Agency. These actions include revising policies and implementing more detailed logging and tracking systems. We have a new policy to address staff out of country travel for business and a new policy to address the approval process for client out of country travel. In order to help ensure that vehicles are owned or leased only when necessary and that transportation requirements are acquired economically, we have reduced our Fleet by 20 per cent.
